The Eucharist is the central mystery of Christian faith and worship, and therefore one of the cornerstones of ecumenical rapprochement. The documents and theological agreements of the ecumenical dialogue that unfolded in the 20th century clearly show that the rapprochement between the churches took place primarily in a dogmatic – and partly liturgical – approach. Based on the approach of ‘Original Apologetics’, returning to the Petrine call to all faithful that they learn the faith and respond to others in a Christian manner (1 Pt 3:15), this paper sets out how these ideas have been presented ordinarily in the parish setting to clergy and laity, consistent with the call of Gaudium et Spes 62. This article critically examines Kenneth Cragg’s concept of ‘divine responsibility’ in relation to the problem of theodicy in Islamic theology. Cragg argues that Islam lacks a genuine theodicy because its understanding of God emphasises divine transcendence and sovereignty but lacks a corresponding sense of divine participation in the human condition.
