Reimagining the Use of Technology among Pentecostal Churches in Nigeria: the Case of Deeper Life Bible Church
- Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy, Redeemer’s University, Nigeria
- Department of Biblical Studies, Princeton Theological Seminary, USA
The integration of technology among Pentecostal Churches in Nigeria received a warm reception in the 21st century compared to the early 1900s when Church doctrine restricted the integration of some technologies in worship services. At its origin, the church frowned at the use of technology due to the belief that technology is a ‘devil’s tool’ for distracting believers. However, the transformation of the world has generally affected the church’s adoption of technology such as the internet, mobile apps, visual and audiovisual equipment, social media pages, and digital platforms to improve their ministry, engage with congregants, and reach new audiences. Therefore, this paper reimagines the impetuses behind harnessing faith and technology among the 21st century Pentecostal Churches in Nigeria, particularly the Deeper Life Bible Church (DLBC). The study employs historical and participatory observation methods to further inform the value of technology in the face of religious practices. It has been discovered that the DLBC has transformed profoundly in its services and has received new colouration due to its use of technology to reach the reached and unreached individuals. Hence, the study recommends that DLBC should provide church leaders and members with training on how to use technology effectively for ministry-related tasks. Also, instead of banning the use of drum sets, Deeper Life Bible Church should consider their adoption.
